WASHINGTON, (The Oklahoma Post) –
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of Oklahoma death row inmate Richard Glossip, granting him a new trial in his decades-long fight to overturn his conviction for an alleged 1997 murder.
Glossip’s case has been riddled with controversial evidence, prosecutorial misconduct, and legal battles that spanned over two decades. His conviction largely rested on the testimony of the admitted killer who struck a deal to avoid the death penalty.
The justices, in a 5-3 ruling authored by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, reversing a lower court’s decision that had upheld Glossip’s conviction and had allowed his execution to move forward despite his claim that prosecutors wrongly withheld evidence that could help his defense.
