This policy explains what The Oklahoma Post collects when you use this site, why we hold it, and what we will and will not do with it.
This site is published by The Oklahoma Post LLC at theokpost.com. This policy applies to that site. It does not apply to other sites we link to, which run under their own policies.
What We Collect
Information you give us
When you use our contact form, we receive what you type into it. That includes your name, your email address, the desk you selected, your message and any file you attach.
Form submissions are delivered to the site administrator’s email account and are stored on our server. They are read by the newsroom.
Accounts
Members and advertisers sign in with an account. We keep only what the account needs to take a purchase and give you access to articles: your email address, your sign-in details and a record of what you bought.
Payments
Payments are processed by Stripe or PayPal. Your card number goes to the processor, not to us. We do not store card numbers. We keep a record of the payment itself: what was bought, the amount, the date and the email address on the order.
Newsletter
When you sign up for the newsletter, your email address goes on our newsletter list. Every email has an unsubscribe link.
Information collected automatically
Our web server records standard technical information every time a page loads. That includes your IP address, the browser and device you are using, the page you requested, the page that referred you and the time of the request. This is ordinary server logging and it happens on essentially every website.
Cookies
This site uses cookies, which are small files stored by your browser. They keep the site working correctly, remember display preferences and, where analytics or advertising are in use, measure traffic.
You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Parts of the site may not work correctly if you do.
What We Do With It
- Answer messages sent through the contact form
- Take payments and give members and advertisers access to their accounts
- Send the newsletter to people who signed up for it
- Report and verify stories
- Operate, secure and troubleshoot the site
- Understand which stories readers are reading
We do not sell your personal information. We do not rent it, trade it or hand it to data brokers.
Sources and Confidentiality
Before You Send Us Something Sensitive
We do not publish a source’s identity without that source’s agreement. That is how we work and we hold to it.
If disclosure would put your job, your safety or your case at risk, say so in your first message and send nothing further until we have answered. We will arrange a channel that fits the situation.
Third Parties
Some functions of this site rely on outside services, including our web host, our email provider, our payment processors Stripe and PayPal, and any analytics or advertising services in use. Those companies process data under their own policies. We do not control what they collect.
Advertising networks, where present, may set their own cookies and use them to serve ads based on your browsing across sites. That relationship is between you and the network. Most offer their own opt-out controls.
When We Disclose Information
We disclose information about a reader only in narrow circumstances:
- To service providers who need it to run the site, and only for that purpose
- Where we are compelled by valid legal process
- Where disclosure is necessary to protect against a credible threat of harm
Where we are legally permitted to notify you before responding to a demand for your information, we will.
Retention
Server logs are kept for a limited period as part of ordinary site operation. Correspondence and materials sent to the newsroom are retained as reporting records, because a story’s underlying documentation has to survive the story.
Your Choices
You can ask us what personal information we hold about you as a reader, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Use the contact form and choose the privacy desk.
We will need enough information to confirm who you are before we act on a request about your data.
What this does not cover
These rights concern personal information we hold about you as a visitor to this website. They do not extend to our published journalism.
A request under this policy is not a mechanism for removing a name, a court record, a document or a factual account from a published story. Reporting is not a database entry and the archive is a record. Requests to correct a factual error in a story are welcome and are handled under our corrections practice, which is a separate process and a different question from privacy.
Children
This site is intended for a general adult audience. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, tell us through the contact form and we will delete it.
Security
We take reasonable measures to protect the information we hold. No website, email account or server is perfectly secure, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Weigh that before you send us anything whose disclosure would harm you.
Changes
We may update this policy. The current version always appears on this page with its date. Material changes will be noted here rather than made silently.
Contact
Questions about this policy, or a request about your data, go through the contact form to the privacy desk.
