President Donald Trump welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and seven European leaders to the White House on Monday in a high-stakes meeting aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine war.

Russian state media and the Kremlin have seized on the Alaska summit as a strategic victory for President Vladimir Putin. State television celebrated the “red carpet” reception in Alaska, portraying it as proof that Russia is no longer isolated on the world stage. One commentator dubbed it “a diplomatic breakthrough” after years of international isolation.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova took to Telegram to scorn Western media, saying their reporting on Putin’s red-carpet welcome has pushed them into a “state of frenzy”, a direct rebuke of long-standing narratives of Russian isolation.
The Kremlin continues to emphasize that any peace agreement must address Russia’s “fundamental security concerns” and the “root causes” of the conflict; language widely interpreted as code for Ukraine having to abandon NATO ambitions and declare neutrality.
While Russian media have yet to weigh in extensively on the August 18 White House summit, analysts expect a similar framing: portraying the substantial European delegation as a sign of Western desperation, casting Trump’s remarks on territorial concessions as vindication of Russian strategy, downplaying proposed security guarantees for Ukraine, and highlighting any cracks between U.S. and European positions to underscore growing division.
Next Steps
The White House did not announce new financial commitments, but the proposed security framework suggests continued Western assistance. The summit came days after Trump’s Alaska meeting with Putin failed to secure a ceasefire.
Diplomats described Monday’s gathering as one of the most critical days for European security since the end of the Cold War. Trump predicted a resolution could come “in a week or two,” though key issues over territory and long-term guarantees remain unresolved.
