Bob Sullivan, a Republican candidate for Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner, will host an “Insurance Rate Shock Town Hall” Tuesday morning in Tulsa, inviting homeowners and drivers to bring their insurance bills and share how rising premiums are affecting their households.
The event is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Buddy LaFortune Community Center, 5202 S. Hudson Ave., Tulsa.
Sullivan, a Certified Risk Manager and OSU graduate with roughly two decades of experience in property and casualty insurance, is running to replace term-limited Commissioner Glen Mulready. He announced his candidacy in November, positioning himself as an industry insider willing to challenge what he calls unchecked rate increases.
“Oklahoma families are experiencing insurance rate shock, and they deserve answers,” Sullivan said in a prepared statement.
The frustration Sullivan is tapping into is well-documented. Oklahoma homeowners pay an average of roughly $6,000 per year for home insurance, more than double the national average of approximately $2,801, according to LendingTree. Multiple industry analyses rank Oklahoma among the most expensive states in the country for homeowners insurance, a distinction driven in part by the state’s severe weather exposure and what critics describe as lax regulatory oversight of rate increase requests.
Sullivan’s campaign has cited examples of individual Tulsa-area homeowners seeing premiums jump from $1,900 to $4,600. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own insurance bills.
Sullivan, who lives in Inola with his wife Jennifer and two children, faces a competitive Republican primary. Other declared candidates for the seat include insurance executive Chris Merideth, former state Sen. Marty Quinn and Shawnee City Commissioner Greta Shuler. Candidate filing opens April 1. The Republican primary is June 16.
