I write to you not as a partisan, but as a son of Oklahoma and as an African-American and Native-American man who has seen how violence scars communities of every race, creed, and political stripe. Our state has deep traditions of faith, family, and freedom, but we also know the pain of loss.
Too many lives have been cut short by firearms in the wrong hands. This is not a Democrat’s problem or a Republican’s problem. It is a national problem, and it is a Oklahoma problem. We cannot let Washington’s partisan gridlock dictate our future while our children walk hallways fearing the next lockdown drill.
The Second Amendment is a part of our heritage, yes but so is common sense. No one in our churches, schools, or neighborhoods should have to wonder if the next Sunday service or Friday night football game could turn into tragedy.
It’s time we come together; farmers, teachers, oil workers, business leaders, Democrats and Republicans alike to demand reforms: stronger background checks, red-flag laws to keep firearms out of dangerous hands, and better mental health resources for those in crisis. Oklahoma has led before, in resilience and in faith. Let’s lead again; not as blue or red, but as one people who believe life is worth protecting.
Oklahoma has always been strongest when it refuses to be bound by the past. Now is our moment to leave behind the broken politics of yesterday and step boldly into tomorrow; together.
